The best things to do in Bangkok for a honeymoon or a couples trip follow the river and the evening: a sunset cruise on the Chao Phraya, dinner in the open air high above the city, an afternoon in a hotel spa built for two, and a stay at a hotel whose own boat takes you where you need to go. Bangkok rewards couples who plan around those hours, because the heat of midday gives way to lit-up temples and skyline after dark.

Sunset cruises on the Chao Phraya

A river cruise is the easiest romantic evening in the city to book, and the route does the work. Meridian Cruise, which has sailed the Chao Phraya since 1988, runs two programs a night from ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank. Both loop past Wat Arun, the Grand Palace and the Rama VIII Bridge down to Asiatique and back, with an international buffet and a resident band.

• Sunset Cruise: leaves at 5 p.m. and runs about an hour and three quarters, timed for the late light on the temples and skyline. It suits couples who want photographs and still have time for dinner in town afterward.
• Dinner Cruise: leaves at 8 p.m. for about two hours and adds a traditional Thai dance performance. Wat Arun is lit every night from sunset, so this is the cruise for the illuminated riverbank.

Meridian also publishes special sailings for nights such as Loy Krathong and New Year's Eve, and charters the boat for weddings and birthdays, which is worth knowing if you are planning an anniversary on the water.

Several riverside hotels run their own boats. The Siam offers its guests a sunset cruise in a boat modeled on a Thai sala, and Banyan Tree Bangkok sails two dinner cruises: the Apsara, a restored teak rice barge serving a five-course Thai menu from River City, and the two-deck Saffron Cruise from ICONSIAM. At Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Sala Rim Naam pairs a Thai set dinner with classical Thai dance on the far bank, reached by the hotel's boat.

Rooftop dining above the city

Sirocco is the dinner most couples picture: an open-air Mediterranean restaurant on the 64th floor of State Tower in Bang Rak, with tables set beneath the tower's golden dome and the skyline and river below. It is an evening restaurant, and lebua itself notes that the terrace is hot by day and comes into its own at dusk. Executive Chef Brian Rodriguez cooks from the coasts of Italy, Greece and Spain, with a chef's tasting menu, an à la carte menu and an oyster and caviar list.

Book ahead. Sirocco takes reservations only with a deposit, and special dates such as Valentine's Day, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve require the full amount up front, non-refundable. The dress code is smart casual. Afterward, Sky Bar on the same floor is walk-in only, so a drink there follows naturally from dinner. The same tower holds two tasting-menu restaurants with two MICHELIN stars each, Mezzaluna on the 65th floor and Chef's Table on the 61st, for a more formal night; all of them sit above lebua at State Tower.

For a river-level alternative, two of Bangkok's most celebrated dining rooms face the water. Côte by Mauro Colagreco at Capella Bangkok cooks the food of the French and Italian Riviera and holds two MICHELIN stars, and Anne-Sophie Pic at Le Normandie in Mandarin Oriental also holds two stars; men need a jacket there at dinner.

A spa day for two

Hotel spas are where Bangkok slows down, and several are designed with couples in mind. Ask the spa whether non-hotel guests can book, since policies differ.

• Auriga Wellness at Capella Bangkok: a riverside garden spa with seven treatment suites, two of them for couples, plus water therapy and a relaxation lounge.
• The spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok: nine treatment rooms, including two couples' rooms and a suite with its own vitality pool and indoor garden.
• The Oriental Spa: Mandarin Oriental's spa occupies a traditional Thai residence across the river, with 18 treatment rooms and a short boat crossing to reach it.
• The Peninsula Spa: a three-story Thai colonial-style building beside the river at The Peninsula Bangkok, with private treatment suites, saunas, steam rooms and plunge pools.
• The Sukhothai Spa: set in 7,000 square meters of gardens at The Sukhothai Bangkok, with a hammam and Thai treatments.
• Opium Spa at The Siam: facials, massage and body treatments, with steam saunas and a lounge called the Opium Den.

The Siam

The Siam is a small, family-owned hotel on three acres of riverside garden in Dusit, the royal quarter. Every room is a suite or villa from 80 square meters, suites have a bathtub big enough for two, and the Riverside Pool Villas have their own pools. Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

The Peninsula, Four Seasons and Rosewood

At The Peninsula, all 370 rooms and suites look across the river to the skyline, and the three-tiered pool steps down toward the water (our review). Planning a couples trip

• Book the evenings first. Rooftop tables, sunset cruises and special-date dinners fill up, and several take deposits.
• Pack for two dress codes. The Grand Palace does not admit shorts, sleeveless or see-through tops, or mini skirts. Evening restaurants usually ask for smart casual, and some require jackets.
• Let the river do the commuting. Riverside hotels run shuttle boats to Sathorn Pier at BTS Saphan Taksin, and several also run boats to ICONSIAM, where Meridian boards.
• Save daylight for the temples. See the temples in the morning, rest through the afternoon at the spa or pool, and head out again at sunset.
