The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is the hotel for travelers who treat the bars and restaurants as part of the trip, not an afterthought. It fills the lower 18 floors of King Power Mahanakhon, Ole Scheeren's 314-meter tower with the pixelated cutaway spiraling up its side, its 155 rooms were designed by Jaime Hayon, and it runs venues from the ground floor to the rooftop. BTS Chong Nonsi connects to the building. The trade-offs: rooms start small, the hotel is more playful than restful, and the MICHELIN Guide lists it in its selection without a Key.

Location and getting around
The tower stands at 114 Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road in Silom, in the Bang Rak district, with direct access from Exit 3 of BTS Chong Nonsi on the Silom line. That line is the useful one here: it runs one way to Sala Daeng for Silom Road and Lumphini, and on to Siam for the malls, and the other way to Saphan Taksin, the station for the river boats. A trip to the temples is therefore a train ride and a boat, with no taxi needed.
The neighborhood suits the hotel's evening focus. Le Du, the modern Thai restaurant with one MICHELIN star, is on Soi Silom 7 in the same district, and further down the Silom line near Saphan Taksin, lebua at State Tower holds Sirocco and the other venues of The Dome.
Rooms and suites
All rooms are between the 8th and 18th floors, with floor-to-ceiling windows, Bang & Olufsen speakers and Nespresso machines, and every category except the entry room and the accessible room has a soaking tub. The entry Standard King is about 29 square meters, compact by the standard of Bangkok's luxury towers, so couples with big suitcases may want to size up.
The corner rooms, at 56 to 57 square meters, sleep a family of two adults and two children, and the Corner Double connects to a Deluxe King. Above them are three balcony suites and two penthouses with kitchens, the largest 144 square meters. Rooms are non-smoking, room service runs 24 hours, and there are accessible rooms.
Dining and bars
Most people choose The Standard for this, and the lineup is broad. Ojo, on the 76th and 77th floors, serves Mexican cooking by chef Francisco "Paco" Ruano of Alcalde restaurant, with a terrace, 360-degree views and a long list of tequila and mezcal; the MICHELIN Guide includes it in its Bangkok restaurant selection. Sky Beach, the rooftop cocktail bar with DJs at night, is billed by the tower's operator as the highest rooftop bar in Bangkok.
Lower down, The Standard Grill brings the New York original's steakhouse menu to Bangkok with regional ingredients and cocktails mixed at the table. Mott 32, from Hong Kong, serves Cantonese food and has private dining rooms for up to 26. Double Standard is an all-day, British-style pub with craft and draft beer and a green terrace, Tease is the tea room for afternoon tea, and The Parlor on the ground floor is the hotel's living room, with coffee, Thai dishes from late morning, DJ sessions, live music and talks. The hotel advises booking everywhere, though it takes walk-ins when there is space.
Pool, gym and the SkyWalk
There is a terrace pool with its own menu of light dishes and juices, and the Standard Gym, open 24 hours with city views, is free for guests, with discounted personal training and group classes. For work, four meeting rooms of 29 to 126 square meters have 3.2-meter ceilings and daylight.
Guests share the building with the King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk, the observation deck and glass tray at the top of the tower. Tickets are sold by King Power Mahanakhon, not the hotel, so a room here does not include entry.
Pets, families and accessibility
Dogs get more of the building here than at most hotels we review. Dogs up to 18 kg are accepted, at most two per room, for a nightly fee plus a deposit and a signed waiver, and they may use all rooms, the lobby and ground floor, the Parlor Terrace, the Double Standard Terrace and the hotel shop. Families have the corner rooms and connecting options, but the hotel's personality leans adult and social, and we found no kids' club among its facilities.
Who it suits, and the alternatives
The Standard suits design-minded travelers, couples and groups planning nights out, and dog owners who want their dog in more than the room. It suits less well travelers who want a large room at the entry level, a quiet, traditional luxury hotel, or the river outside the window. For a first visit that mixes a temple morning with a late dinner, though, the Silom line makes it a workable base: the train to Saphan Taksin and the river boats cover the day, and the lift covers the evening.
