The best things to do in Bangkok in October are tied to the calendar: watching the Royal Navy rehearse the Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya, eating your way through the Vegetarian Festival on Yaowarat Road, catching the last weeks of the city's international performing arts festival, and seeing the Bangkok Art Biennale open on October 29. October is also the tail of the rainy season, so the best plans pair an outdoor highlight with an indoor fallback.
Here is what is on in October 2026, when it happens and how to fit it around the weather. Dates come from the organizers' official announcements; where a date depends on the lunar calendar and has not yet been announced, we say so.
What October weather means for your plans
The Thai Meteorological Department describes Thailand's rainy season as running from mid-May to mid-October, with the northeast monsoon usually taking over from mid-October and bringing cooler, drier air to upper Thailand over the following weeks. In practice, early October can still bring heavy afternoon rain in Bangkok, and the second half of the month tends to be the transition toward the cool season. The wettest months, by the department's account, are August and September.
Rain matters most for getting around. On September 26, 2026, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) advised visitors that rainfall and localized flooding in parts of Bangkok were slowing road travel, and suggested the BTS Skytrain and MRT as alternatives to taxis. Watch the Royal Barge Procession rehearsals
The biggest spectacle of autumn 2026 is on the river. The Royal Barge Procession will be held on November 6, 2026, for the Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Arun, and the Royal Thai Navy is rehearsing through October. According to TAT, 52 royal barges crewed by 2,200 navy personnel will form a procession about 1,280 meters long, led by four principal barges including Suphannahong, the Golden Swan. The route runs from Wasukri Pier past the Grand Palace to Wat Arun.
Three minor rehearsals remain in October, on the 2nd, 8th and 15th, followed by two full-dress rehearsals on Wednesday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 28. Each is expected to begin at about 2:30 p.m. TAT says the public can watch from viewing areas on both banks between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun. The full-dress rehearsals are the closest thing to the real event, and they combine well with an afternoon at the Grand Palace or Wat Pho, both on the same stretch of river. Arrive early, bring water and rain cover, and expect crowds near the best vantage points.
Eat through the Vegetarian Festival in Chinatown
The Vegetarian Festival, also called the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, is a nine- to ten-day period of merit-making and plant-based eating in Thai-Chinese communities. In Bangkok the focus is Yaowarat Road: TAT listed the 2025 Chinatown Vegetarian Festival along Yaowarat from Odeon Circle to the Chaloem Buri intersection, from October 20 to 29, 2025. Stalls and shops switch to vegetarian versions of Chinatown's usual dishes for the duration.
The festival follows the Chinese lunar calendar and begins with the ninth lunar month. The Hong Kong Observatory's calendar places the start of the ninth lunar month on October 10, 2026, so this year's festival should fall in the middle of October rather than at the end. TAT had not published 2026 dates when we checked, so confirm them before you plan a trip around it. Wat Traimit, the temple of the Golden Buddha, stands at the edge of Chinatown near Yaowarat and makes a good start to an evening on the festival street.
Catch the last weeks of the performing arts festival
Bangkok's International Festival of Performing Arts and Music runs from September 5 to October 17, 2026, at the Thailand Cultural Centre Main Hall. TAT describes a program of 12 performances by companies from nine countries, spanning opera, ballet, contemporary dance and music, with titles including Madama Butterfly, La Traviata, Romeo & Juliet and The Great Gatsby. The first half of October is your window; book through the festival's official channels.
See the Bangkok Art Biennale open
The fifth Bangkok Art Biennale opens on October 29, 2026, and runs to February 28, 2027, under the theme Angels & Mara, a nod to Bangkok's Thai name, Krung Thep, which is usually translated as City of Angels (we explain why in our guide to the nickname). TAT lists venues across the city, including Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Museum Siam, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and the National Museum Bangkok. If your trip ends before the opening, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is a good year-round alternative, and its main exhibitions are free.
King Bhumibol Memorial Day, October 13
October 13 marks the anniversary of the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, and is a public holiday in Thailand. TAT's holiday calendar lists it as King Bhumibol Memorial Day. Expect government offices and banks to close, and be respectful around any memorial ceremonies you come across.
Rainy-afternoon plans
When a storm rolls in, move indoors. The Jim Thompson House Museum is seen on a guided tour through traditional Thai houses raised on teak pillars, SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World fills the basement floors of Siam Paragon, and MOCA Bangkok holds more than a thousand works of Thai modern and contemporary art, well north of the center.
