Luxury Things to Do in Bangkok: River Hotels, MICHELIN-Starred Thai Dining and Spa Days

What are the best luxury things to do in Bangkok? Start with the river. The city's most celebrated hotels line the Chao Phraya, several of them run their own boats, and an evening on the water, a tasting menu at a MICHELIN-starred Thai restaurant and a spa afternoon across the river can fill a trip on their own. This guide covers where to stay, where to eat, and the experiences that make a Bangkok stay feel special, with links to our full hotel reviews and listings.

Bangkok's luxury is less about showiness than about service and setting: a hotel boat instead of a taxi in traffic, a restored shophouse dining room, a suite that looks across the river at the skyline. Book the most sought-after tables well ahead; the rest can be planned once you know your dates.

Stay at one of the great river hotels

The hotel is the center of a luxury Bangkok trip, and the riverside is where the city's grand hotels cluster.

  • Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok opened as The Oriental Hotel in 1876, and its original building survives as the Authors' Wing. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Three MICHELIN Keys, the guide's highest hotel distinction. Read our Mandarin Oriental Bangkok review.
  • Capella Bangkok, on Charoen Krung Road, is deliberately small and low-rise, with 101 rooms, suites and villas, and it also holds Three MICHELIN Keys. See our Capella Bangkok review.
  • The Siam, a family-owned hotel in Dusit near the royal and museum district, was designed with Bill Bensley around a collection of antiques and has Three MICHELIN Keys as well. See our review of The Siam.
  • The Peninsula Bangkok, on the Thonburi bank, was built so that every room looks over the river, and its Peninsula Academy runs guest programs from Thai cooking to long-tail boat tours of the canals.

If you would rather be near the shopping streets, Rosewood Bangkok connects directly to BTS Ploenchit, and Aman Nai Lert Bangkok has 52 suites rising above the private gardens of Nai Lert Park. For a side-by-side comparison, see the best luxury hotels in Bangkok.

Book a tasting menu at a MICHELIN-starred Thai restaurant

Bangkok's fine dining is at its most distinctive when it is Thai. The 2026 MICHELIN Guide Thailand includes:

  • Sorn, three MICHELIN stars, cooking the food of Southern Thailand in a restored house off Sukhumvit Soi 26. Tables are released a month at a time, so plan ahead.
  • Baan Tepa, two MICHELIN stars, a seven-course Thai menu in the chef's family house in Bang Kapi, built around native crops and regional producers.
  • Le Du, one MICHELIN star, a modern Thai tasting menu of four or six courses on Soi Silom 7.
  • Restaurant POTONG, one MICHELIN star, a progressive Thai-Chinese menu in a restored five-story family shophouse in Chinatown.

Each has its own booking system and deposit rules, so check the restaurant's own page before you fly.

Dine above the city

Sirocco is the open-air Mediterranean restaurant on the 64th floor of State Tower on Silom Road, under the golden dome of lebua at State Tower. It is an evening place: tables sit outside with the skyline and the river below, and dusk is the time to book.

See the river after dark

A dinner cruise is the easiest way to see Wat Arun and the Grand Palace lit up at night. Meridian Cruise, which began as a family-run river service in 1988, sails from ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank, looping past the riverside landmarks with dinner and live music on board. If your hotel is on the river, ask whether it can arrange a private boat for the evening instead.

Spend an afternoon at a riverside spa

The Oriental Spa, part of Mandarin Oriental, occupies a traditional Thai residence with 18 treatment rooms on the opposite bank, reached by the hotel's short boat crossing. The Peninsula Spa is in a three-story colonial-style building beside its pool, with private treatment suites, saunas and steam rooms.

Take afternoon tea in the Authors' Lounge

The Authors' Lounge at Mandarin Oriental serves afternoon tea on the ground floor of the hotel's original building, among photographs of the writers who have stayed there.

Add culture, comfortably

  • The Jim Thompson House Museum, the teak home and art collection of the man known as the Thai Silk King, is seen on a guided tour.
  • The Mahanakhon SkyWalk has an indoor deck on the 74th floor and a rooftop with a glass floor, open until midnight.
  • Rajadamnern Stadium, the historic Muay Thai venue, sells VIP Lounge seats with balcony and sofa seating and a private bar.
